What is Pay what you want?

Pay what you want is exactly what it sounds like – you chose how much to pay for the Basic tax plan. Instead of setting a minimum payment amount, we let Basic plan users choose how much to pay for our tax software. 

Is Pay what you want the same as “Free”?

While our pricing model does mean you can pay $0 for filing your taxes with Wealthsimple, a meaningful portion of our clients do make a voluntary contribution. While we understand that not everyone is in the position to be able to afford tax filing software, we appreciate any contribution you’re able to make to help support Wealthsimple Tax and keep our software available to as many Canadians as possible. Some of our competitors charge $30-60 for the features available for free from Wealthsimple Tax. 

Why do you need my contribution?

The Wealthsimple Tax product is run by a core team of only 10 people. While we help over a million Canadians file their taxes every year, we’re a fraction of the size of our competitors, including TurboTax and H&R Block which are international entities that generated billions of dollars of revenue in 2023.
