As a general rule, child support is not taxable to the recipient or deductible by the payer. If you aren’t sure if your payments are taxable/deductible, please answer a few questions before filing your return.
I received support payments:
Answer “Yes” to the question “Did you receive any support payments?”
- Enter the total of all support payments received for yourself or a child (both taxable and non-taxable)
- Report the taxable amount of support. Learn more.
If you were required to repay some amount of support, answer “Yes” to the question “Were you required to repay any support payments under a court order?” You can then enter the amount needed to repay, and the deduction you’re allowed to claim.
I made support payments:
Answer “Yes” to the question “Did you make any support payments?”
- Enter the total of all support payments you made.
- Report the deductible support payments you made. Learn more.
If you need to report any support payments repaid to you, answer “Yes” to the question “Were any support payments repaid to you pursuant to a court order?” You can then enter the total of all (taxable & non-taxable) support payments repaid to you, along with the taxable amount of support payments repaid to you.
