Wealthsimple Tax is designed to automatically maximize your and your partner’s combined refunds, by analyzing the information in the partners’ linked tax returns and optimizing credits and deductions that could be claimed on either return.
If you don’t want to complete both returns before filing your own, you must prepare the returns unlinked and at the very minimum, enter the following in your partner’s return:
- complete the required fields in the Spouse or Common-law partner section
- enter your partner’s income information; this number should be as accurate as possible as it can impact who will claim child care expenses and certain provincial credits, and will be used in calculating the spousal amount. If you don’t report your partner’s income, you can’t claim credits that are based on family income.
- click Check & Optimize and clear any errors from the return
If you need to unlink your tax returns, follow the instructions in this post.
