Overview
When you place an order to trade crypto, Wealthsimple gets prices from third parties known as liquidity providers. These liquidity providers buy and sell crypto on global markets, and we work with multiple partners to get the most competitive crypto prices.
Since crypto primarily trades in global markets in USD, we convert the prices provided by our liquidity providers from USD to CAD for you using our foreign exchange (FX) rate. In some cases, the FX rate can go up or down between when the order was submitted and when the order was filled.
Wealthsimple's crypto trading fee
You'll be charged Wealthsimple's trading fee on each order based on the value of the crypto bought or sold. Your fee depends on whether you have Active Trader status.
If you're a Wealthsimple Crypto client without Active Trader status
Starting September 7, 2026, you'll pay a flat 0.5% base fee, plus a spread that will be presented to you during the order flow.
If you have Active Trader status
You pay a flat fee starting at 0.5% on all crypto trades, and there's a 0% spread. Your fee decreases as your 30-day trading volume increases:
| 30-day trading volume* | Fee | Spread |
|---|---|---|
| Less than $10,000 | 0.5% | 0% |
| $10,000–$99,999.99 | 0.35% | 0% |
| $100,000–$499,999.99 | 0.25% | 0% |
| $500,000–$999,999.99 | 0.15% | 0% |
| $1,000,000–$9,999,999.99 | 0.10% | 0% |
| $10,000,000–$14,999,999.99 | 0.05% | 0% |
| $15,000,000+ | 0% | 0% |
*DEX transactions aren't included in the 30-day trading volume count.
Understanding the spread
The spread is the difference between the live market price and the price you actually trade at. If you don't have Active Trader status, a spread is included in your quoted price on market orders. If you have Active Trader status, you pay no spread on any order.
The spread may vary based on the asset you're trading, your order amount, market conditions, and other factors. We'll show you the spread before you submit your order.
Limit orders aren't charged a spread, regardless of your Active Trader status.
The live market price is shown at the top of the trade screen. Tap the quoted price to confirm whether a spread applies.
The small order surcharge
Starting September 7, 2026, a $1 surcharge applies to any individual crypto order under $100. This surcharge applies whether or not you have Active Trader status. Orders of $100 or more aren't affected.
