Understand your running balance
The running balance shows you what your chequing account balance was immediately after each transaction. This creates a clear, chronological record of how your balance has changed over time, helping you understand how individual transactions affect your funds without needing to do mental math.
How the running balance works
For chequing accounts, each completed transaction in your activity feed displays your account balance at that point in time. You can find this balance directly below or alongside the transaction details.
Important notes about your running balance
- Chequing accounts only: Running balances are only available for chequing accounts
- Mobile only: You can use this feature in the Wealthsimple app. It’s not available on the web yet.
- Pending transactions: We mark running balances for pending transactions and any transactions that follow them with an asterisk (*). This means the balance might change after the transaction settles.
- Manual Transaction: You’ll see transactions handled manually by our operations team as new Manual Transaction line items in your feed.
- Reversals: We backdate reversals to the original transaction date. This recalculates your balance history, and your balances might look different.
- Older transactions: Transactions before January 2026 might not show a balance. This doesn’t affect the accuracy of your current balance.

Frequently asked questions
What does the asterisk (*) next to my running balance mean?
The asterisk means there's a pending transaction that hasn't fully settled yet. Because a pending transaction can affect all the balances that follow it, those balances are also marked with an asterisk until the transaction finalizes.
Why did my running balance history change?
When a transaction is reversed, it's backdated to its original date and all running balances from that point are recalculated. This is expected behaviour — it ensures your balance history is accurate, as though the original transaction never occurred.
Why is there a "Manual Transaction" in my feed that I don't recognize?
Manual Transaction entries reflect adjustments applied directly to your account by our operations team (for example, a manually completed transfer, a correction, or a reconciliation). They appear in your feed to keep your running balance accurate.
If you'd like more detail, you can cross-reference the entry with your monthly statement or download your activity as a CSV from the Activity tab. If you still have questions after checking, contact our support team.
My running balance doesn't match my current balance. What should I do?
Your most recent running balance should match your current account balance. If you're seeing a persistent difference, please contact our support team so we can look into it.
