If your foreign tax credit is showing as $0, there are three possible reasons:
- Missing foreign tax information
- Check if you've entered the amount of foreign tax paid in your profile
- Navigate to the relevant income section (e.g., Employment Income, Investment Income, Rental Income) and ensure you've entered the foreign tax amount
- No federal tax payable
- Your foreign tax credit is limited by the amount on line 42900 of your Schedule 1
- If you don't owe any federal tax, there's no amount to be credited
- Low foreign income or tax amounts
- The foreign income or tax paid might be too low to result in a credit
- Review your entries to ensure they're accurate and complete
To resolve this issue:
- Double-check your foreign income entries
- Go to the relevant income sections in your profile (e.g., Employment Income, Investment Income)
- Verify that you've reported all foreign income correctly
- Review your foreign tax paid entries
- Ensure you've entered all foreign taxes paid in the appropriate sections
- Check your T1 and Schedule 1
- Locate your T1 and Schedule 1 in the Documents section of your profile
- Verify the amount on line 42900
If you've confirmed all information is correct and still have questions, consider consulting a tax expert or a tax professional familiar with international tax situations.
