Understand the NETFILE access code

Overview

The NETFILE access code (NAC) is an 8-digit code used to confirm your identity with the CRA. The NAC is optional in Wealthsimple Tax. You can leave the NETFILE access code field blank and continue filing your return. If you see NETFILE error code 21, you can fix it by checking or clearing your code.

Where to find your NETFILE access code

• CRA My Account:

  1. Log in to your account
  2. Click Tax returns in the left-hand menu
  3. Select your most recent Notice of Assessment
  4. Find the code on the right, below your address, Social Insurance Number (SIN), and the date

  

• Notice of Assessment (paper or electronic):

  1. Look in the top-right corner of the first page
  2. Find the code below the date

  

Enter your NETFILE access code in Wealthsimple Tax

1. Go to the Personal information section of your Wealthsimple Tax profile
2. Find the NETFILE access code field at the top of the section
3. Enter your 8-digit code

If you don't enter the code

If you leave the NETFILE access code field blank, you'll need to provide information from an earlier tax return to confirm your identity when communicating with the CRA.

Fix NETFILE error code 21

You may see NETFILE error code 21 when the NAC you entered in Wealthsimple Tax doesn't match the code the CRA has on file.

To fix the error:

1. Compare the code you entered in Wealthsimple Tax with the NAC on your most recent Notice of Assessment
2. Make sure you entered all 8 digits correctly and didn't include an extra space before or after the code
3. If the error continues, clear the NETFILE access code field and submit your return without it, since the NAC is optional

If the field looks blank and you still see error code 21, make sure it doesn't contain an extra space.

If you still can't submit your return, contact the CRA to confirm your NETFILE access code.
