As a student, you may have leftover tuition expenses after reducing your taxes owed to zero. These unused amounts can be carried forward to future years or transferred to eligible family members.
Important note: Only unused credits from the current tax year can be transferred to a parent, grandparent, or spouse. Unused amounts from previous years cannot be transferred.

Finding your unused tuition
Using your CRA My Account:
- Log in to your CRA My Account
- Click Tax Returns
- Scroll to Carryover amounts and click View carryover amounts
- Find the Federal Tuition, Education and Textbook Amounts and Provincial Tuition, Education and Textbook Amounts tables
- Check the Amount available for carry forward column in the most recent year's row
Without a CRA My Account:
- Check your most recent Notice of Assessment
- Or review federal and provincial Schedule 11 from your prior year's tax return
For Québec residents:
- Log into your Revenu Québec My Account, or
- Check boxes 40 and 48 of your most recent Schedule T
Claiming unused tuition in Wealthsimple Tax
- Add the Tuition and Education Amounts section to your profile
- Answer "Yes" to "Were you a post-secondary student in an earlier year?"
- Enter your unused federal and/or provincial tuition amounts in the appropriate fields
Special situations
- Moving between provinces during the year (except Québec):
- Enter unused federal and provincial amounts as found
- Indicate your move in the Personal information > About Your Province or Territory section
- Wealthsimple Tax will apply the correct provincial rules
- Moving from Québec:
- Enter the amount from line 40 or 48 of your most recent Schedule T
- If both lines have amounts, add them together
- Moving to Québec from elsewhere in Canada:
- For tuition paid after 2012: Enter the lesser of your federal unused amount and total tuition paid (sum of all T2202 slips) in the "Unused Quebec amount at 8% rate" box
- For tuition from before 2013: Contact Revenu Québec for assistance in calculating amounts for 8% and 20% boxes
Important: Generally, you cannot claim provincial tuition amounts from one province while living in a different province. For example, Ontario tuition credits cannot be claimed on an Alberta tax return.
Remember:
- Keep all tuition-related documents for your records
- Review your Notice of Assessment each year for updated unused amounts
