Frequently asked questions
What types of RESP transfers can I complete myself in-product?
Currently, you can transfer funds between your RESP accounts that have the same beneficiary. The system will check that the beneficiary in both accounts is the same person (verified by SIN and name). More complex transfers, such as between siblings, will be added in a future update. Please note that once you’ve completed your initial self-serve internal transfer, subsequent internal transfers will require manual support, and our support team can assist.
Can I transfer just a portion of my RESP balance?
Yes, you can transfer any amount from your RESP to another eligible RESP account.
Can I transfer between Individual and Family RESPs?
Yes, as long as both the beneficiary and the account owner(s) are an exact match. For example, you can transfer from an Individual RESP to a Family RESP where the same beneficiary is listed.
Can I transfer between joint and single-owner RESPs?
It’s possible, but there may be some restrictions. Please contact support for assistance with these types of transfers.
Will transferring my RESP affect my grants or contributions?
For qualifying transfers with the same beneficiary, there will be no negative impact on grants or contribution room. The transfer preserves the original categorization of funds (contributions, grants, and growth) and maintains all grant eligibility.
Why can't I see my RESP as an available option to internally transfer funds?
Some RESPs are currently RESPs with previous withdrawals, internal transfers, or institutional transfers that have special regulatory considerations that require manual review. Please contact our support team to manually assist with these internal transfers.
Why can't I transfer my RESP that was transferred in from another institution?
Institutionally transferred-in RESPs often have complex grant and contribution histories that require additional verification to ensure proper handling of government grants and compliance with CRA regulations. Our support team is equipped to handle these transfers manually to ensure all regulatory requirements are met.
How long does an RESP transfer take to complete?
In-app RESP transfers initiated through self-serve typically process within 4-6 business days.
How can I see the breakdown of contributions, grants, and growth in my RESP?
We're working on adding a detailed breakdown of these components by beneficiary on your account details page in an upcoming update.
