Since 2014, you no longer need to apply separately for the GST/HST credit and related provincial sales tax credits. Here's what you need to know:
Automatic assessment:
- File your tax return to be considered for these credits
- The CRA automatically determines your eligibility
- You'll be notified if you're entitled to receive the credit
For couples:
- Only one partner can receive the credit
- The credit is paid to the person whose return is assessed first
Credits covered by this automatic process:
- GST/HST credit
- BC low income climate action tax credit
- Newfoundland and Labrador harmonized sales tax credit
- Newfoundland and Labrador seniors’ benefit
- Nova Scotia affordable living tax credit
- Ontario sales tax credit
- Prince Edward Island sales tax credit
- Saskatchewan low‑income tax credit

- Report any changes in your marital status or address promptly
Steps to ensure you're considered:
- File your tax return on time

Remember:
- You don't need to take any additional steps beyond filing your tax return
