Understanding Wealthsimple Tax accounts and profiles:
- Account:
- What is used to log in to Wealthsimple
- Accessed using your email address and password
- One account per email address
- Can contain up to 20 tax profiles
- Profile:
- Represents a specific person within an account
- Each tax return is associated with a profile
- Example: Your account has separate profiles for you and your partner
Linking returns with your partner
- Navigate to the Personal information section in your tax profile
- Under You and Your Family, select "Married" or "Common-law" from the dropdown for Marital status
- Answer "Yes" to the question "Do you want to prepare your returns together?"
- Follow the pop-up instructions to link returns
Important notes for linked returns:
- Both profiles must be in the same Wealthsimple Tax account
- Linking allows for optimized allocation of credits and deductions
Partners living in different provinces
If you and your partner reside in different provinces:
- You cannot link your returns in Wealthsimple Tax
- Decide who will claim specific federal credits (e.g., children, public transit)
- Ensure only one person claims each particular credit
To unlink returns:
- Go to the Personal information section
- Find the You and Your Family heading
- Answer "No" to the question "Do you want to prepare your returns together?"
Remember:
- Keep your account and profile information up to date
- Linking returns can help maximize tax benefits for couples
- Different provincial residencies require separate, unlinked returns
