If you want to file your return without completing your partner's, or if they've already filed using another method, you'll need to unlink your returns.
Note: Unlinking prevents Wealthsimple Tax from optimizing your returns together for maximum refunds.
Steps to unlink your returns:
- Navigate to the Personal information section in your profile
- Scroll down to the You and Your Family subsection
- Ensure the answer to "Do you want to prepare your returns together?" is "No"
- If you need to change the answer, confirm that you want to unlink the returns
After unlinking:
- In the Your Partner section:
- Enter your partner's income information, or
- Indicate that you won't report your partner's income
- Review shared sections:
- Go through any previously added shared sections
- Delete any amounts that you won't claim
- Repeat this process for your partner's return if it's still in your account
Important notes:
- You cannot unlink returns if one partner has already filed
- Unlinking may affect credits and deductions that depend on combined income
- Ensure you have accurate information about your partner's income for your return
Remember:
- Keep all relevant documents for both you and your partner for your records
- Consider the potential impact on your tax situation before unlinking
If you're unsure about whether to unlink your returns or how it might affect your taxes, consider consulting with a tax expert.
