A negative amount in box 21 will only appear if you are trading futures contracts or options contracts. If you have a negative amount in box 21, you can’t use the T5008 section in Wealthsimple Tax.
If your loss is a capital loss:
- add the Capital Gains (or Losses) section through the search box
- enter “Proceeds” of $0
- enter the absolute value of the amount in box 21 as your ACB (e.g., enter it as a positive number)
- this will add the capital loss to your Schedule 3
If your loss is an investment loss:
- add the Interest Expense & Carrying Charges (Line 22100) section through the search box
- enter the absolute value of the amount in box 21 (e.g., enter it as a positive number) as a carrying charge
- this will add the amount to line 22100 and it will be deducted from your income
If your loss is a business loss:
- report it on your T2125 for business income
