Anytime you sell or trade a cryptocurrency, you are creating a taxable event. Just like when you trade stocks or ETFs, your cryptocurrency gains and losses impact your total taxable income.

Reporting cryptocurrencies on your tax return can be a very manual process, especially if you traded across multiple exchanges or wallets. To simplify reporting cryptocurrency gains or losses, Wealthsimple is offering the ability to import your trading information from over 300+ external crypto wallets and exchanges. This means that your gains or losses are automatically calculated for you, reducing the risk of error.

More details:

• Automatic crypto reporting is free to clients who have under 500 crypto transactions throughout their wallets.
• Clients with more than 500 crypto transactions will have a payment option if they wish to continue with the automated reporting for their crypto gains or losses.

Automatically import your cryptocurrency trading information into Tax

To automatically import your trading information from another cryptocurrency platform into Wealthsimple Tax, follow the steps below:

1. Log into your Wealthsimple account.
2. Select the Tax tab at the top of the screen.
3. Select a tax return or start a new tax return.
4. Scroll down to Auto-fill your return  
5. Next to Crypto with other exchanges click on Import gains and losses
6. Select Continue
7. Read through the Terms and Conditions, and select I agree
8. Search for an exchange or wallet that you wish to add
9. Choose Setup auto-sync and follow the prompts
10. Enter your Api key and Api secret
11. Select Secure Import
12. You will be shown a list of your transactions
13. Review your transactions and select Add to tax return
14. Select Continue
15. You will now see your Tax Report for the exchange or wallet you selected
16. Click Send to Wealthsimple Tax and your information will be imported to Wealthsimple Tax
17. Select Add to return to add your capital gains and losses to your return

Manually import your cryptocurrency trading information into Tax

If you would rather enter your transactions manually, you can do so through this feature as well. You can manually add in deposits, withdrawals, and trades that you made within the specific wallet or exchange. To do so, follow these steps:

1. Log into your Wealthsimple account.
2. Select the Tax tab at the top of the screen.
3. Select a tax return or start a new tax return.
4. Scroll down to Auto-fill your return  
5. Next to Crypto with other exchanges click on Import gains and losses
6. Select Continue
7. Read through the Terms and Conditions, and select I agree
8. Search for an exchange or wallet that you wish to add
9. Choose Create without data 
10. Select Continue at the top right-hand corner of your screen
11. Click the button that says 0 transactions
12. At the top right-hand corner of your screen, select Add transaction
13. Add either a Deposit, Withdrawal or Trade
14. Enter in your information and click Save
15. Once you have added in all of your transactions, select Calculate capital gains at the top of your screen
16. You will see a summary of your transactions. Review them and then select Add to tax return
