Understanding transaction authorizations
Transactions typically go through the following lifecycle:
- Transactions start as authorizations. Merchants have 3-5 business days to collect funds and settle these transactions. It can be longer depending on what you buy, like car rentals or hotel reservations.
- If merchants don't collect these funds in time, or if they initiate a refund before collecting funds, the authorization expires and the funds will return to your account.
Frequently asked questions
Why was my transaction posted at a later date?
Some merchants settle transactions after shipping a product or collecting a tip. If there's a shipping delay, the original authorization will expire.
If the merchant confirms your order or transaction is still in process, we recommend keeping these funds in your Cash account, as the merchant may process a force-posted transaction (meaning they'll come back to collect the funds).
Force-posted transactions don't happen often and depend on the merchant. Wealthsimple doesn't control how transactions are completed and can't manually expire transactions to expedite this process.
