Overview
If notifications are turned on in your phone's settings and inside the Wealthsimple app, but you're still not receiving them, the most common cause is a privacy or security tool on your device blocking the connection.
Wealthsimple uses a service called Braze to deliver push notifications. Some apps and settings can prevent your phone from reaching Braze, which stops notifications from coming through, even though everything looks correctly enabled.
Common tools that can interfere
Virtual private networks (VPNs)
A VPN routes your internet traffic through a private server. Common examples include:
- NordVPN
- ProtonVPN
- Surfshark
- ExpressVPN
- Mullvad
- TunnelBear
- Windscribe
Ad blockers and tracker blockers
These tools hide ads and block tracking across your apps and browser. Common examples include:
- AdGuard
- Blokada
- Lockdown
- Privacy Guardian
- DuckDuckGo App Tracking Protection
- 1Blocker
Private or secure Domain Name System (DNS) settings
A private DNS setting sends your device's web lookups through a privacy-focused provider instead of your network's default.
- On Android, this is usually found under Settings, then Network and Internet, then Private DNS
- On iOS, this is usually found under Settings, then General, then VPN and Device Management, or within a configuration profile
Common providers include:
- NextDNS
- ControlD
- CleanBrowsing
- Cloudflare
- Quad9
- LibreDNS
What to try
- Temporarily turn off any VPN, ad blocker, or private DNS. Then log out of the Wealthsimple app, fully close it, reopen it, and sign back in. This gives the app a chance to re-register your device for notifications.
- Try a different network. Test your home Wi-Fi, your mobile data, and any other network you use. Some networks, especially at workplaces, have their own filtering in place that you may not be aware of.
- If notifications still don't come through after the steps above, uninstall the Wealthsimple app, reinstall it, sign in, and re-enable notifications when prompted.
Frequently asked questions
Why would a VPN or ad blocker stop my notifications if everything looks enabled?
These tools can block or reroute the connection your device needs to reach Braze, the service Wealthsimple uses to deliver push notifications. Your phone and app settings can show notifications as enabled even when the underlying connection is being blocked.
Can I keep my VPN or ad blocker on and still get notifications?
Some VPNs, ad blockers, and private DNS providers block the specific connection needed for notifications, while others don't. If you want to keep using one of these tools, you may need to allowlist Braze using the domains sdk.iad-05.braze.com and b.webresource.ca, or the Wealthsimple app itself, in that tool's settings. Allowlisting doesn't always resolve the issue, so you'll need to test whether notifications come through afterward.
