Overview
As the parent or legal guardian on a kids and teens account, you can manage card controls for your child's Kids and Teens Visa* prepaid card directly from the Wealthsimple app.
This includes setting spend limits, restricting certain types of purchases, and freezing or unfreezing the card if it's ever lost or stolen. A co-manager can access most of these controls too.
Spend limits
You can set a spending limit for your child's card at four levels:
- Per transaction
- Daily
- Weekly
- Monthly
Restricted purchases
You can restrict your child's card in three ways:
Transactions
Block specific types of purchases:
- In-person purchases
- ATM withdrawals
- Online (e-commerce) purchases
International spending
Turn international purchases on or off for your child's card with a single toggle.
Categories
Block specific purchase categories, starting with digital gaming and in-app purchases.
Freezing or unfreezing the card
If your child's card is lost, stolen, or you're concerned about misuse, you can freeze it at any time from the app, the same way you would with any Wealthsimple Visa card. Unfreeze it just as easily when you're ready.
If the card is lost or stolen, see Replace a lost or stolen Wealthsimple Visa card for next steps.
PIN, lost or stolen cards, and disputes
Changing your child's PIN, replacing a lost or stolen card, and disputing a transaction all work the same way as they do for any Wealthsimple Visa card. See Lock or unlock your Wealthsimple Visa card, View or change your Wealthsimple Visa card PIN, and Replace a lost or stolen Wealthsimple Visa card for details.
Co-manager access to card controls
A co-manager can do most of what you can do with your child's card, with a few exceptions that stay with the primary adult on file.
| Action | Co-manager | Primary adult |
|---|---|---|
| Set spend limits and restrictions | Yes | Yes |
| Freeze or unfreeze the card | Yes | Yes |
| Order the card | No | Yes |
| Set up parent-paid interest | No | Yes |
| Close the account | No | Yes |
Frequently asked questions
Can I set a spending limit on my child's card?
Yes. You can set limits per transaction, daily, weekly, and monthly.
Can I block certain types of purchases?
Yes. You can block in-person purchases, ATM withdrawals, and online purchases, plus specific categories like online games or in-app purchases.
Can I turn off international purchases?
Yes, this can be toggled on or off at any time.
Can I temporarily allow a purchase that would normally be blocked?
Not directly. There's no built-in temporary override for a single purchase. You can turn off the control that's blocking it, then turn it back on once the purchase is made.
Can a co-manager also manage card controls?
Yes. A co-manager can do anything you can do with the card, except order it, set up parent-paid interest, or close the account. Those stay with the primary adult on file.
Why was a non-gaming purchase blocked as digital gaming, or a gaming purchase not blocked?
We try to block all purchases that fall into these categories, but we can't guarantee this with complete accuracy. Merchants may sell restricted products at locations we don't want to block entirely: for example, gas stations and convenience stores sell everyday items along with age-restricted products. Contact us if you notice this happening, so we can review it.
