Overview
Your handle ($handle) is a unique identifier you use to send and receive money with Wealthsimple Pay. We assign a handle to every client with a personal chequing account, so friends can find you right away. You can keep it or change it yourself in the Wealthsimple app.
By default, other Wealthsimple chequing account owners can find you by entering your full handle exactly. They can't find you by your name, email, phone number, or part of your handle. If you'd rather not be found, you can turn on Privacy Mode.
Handle requirements
- Your handle can use letters, numbers, and underscores, and can be up to 15 characters long
- Your handle may not mislead or deceive others as to your identity or create an undue risk of chargebacks or mistaken payments
- You can't use trademarked names in your handle
- You can't use inappropriate or offensive content in your handle
- Handles are subject to availability, and Wealthsimple reserves the right to change your handle at its discretion at any time. We may reclaim or make handles unavailable without liability to you.
How we assign your handle
You don't need to set up a handle yourself. We assign one automatically:
- New clients: We assign your handle when you open your first chequing account. Opening more chequing accounts doesn't create another handle.
- Existing clients without a handle: We're assigning handles in phases.
- Clients who already have a handle: Your handle stays the same.
We build your handle from your preferred first name, the first letter of your last name, and some numbers. For example, $emmas9317. In some cases we use your initials or WS, and some numbers instead.
When your handle is ready, you'll get a Meet your new handle notification in the Wealthsimple app. Tap it to see your handle, turn on Privacy Mode, or learn more.
Change your handle
You can change your handle yourself in the Wealthsimple app. You don't need to contact our support team.
You can change your handle up to 3 times, so you can have up to 4 handles in total, including the one we assign. You can't reverse a change or reuse a handle you've had before.
To change your handle in the Wealthsimple app:
- Log in to your Wealthsimple app
- Tap the Profile icon at the top of your screen
- Tap the Settings (gear) icon in the top right corner
- Select Personal information
- Enter the handle you want. We show whether it's available and how many changes you have left
- Confirm your change. You'll see Handle updated
Keep in mind that when you change your handle, we register a new [your handle]@wealthsimple.me address for you to receive Interac e-Transfer® transactions.
Turn on Privacy Mode
Privacy Mode is off by default, so people who enter your full handle can find you. When you turn it on, people who aren't already your contacts can't find you or send you money. Your existing contacts aren't affected, and you can turn it off anytime.
You can turn on Privacy Mode from the Meet your new handle notification or from your Wealthsimple Pay settings. For the full steps, see Update your privacy settings or block a contact in your chequing account.

Frequently asked questions
I already had a handle before this update. Will anything change for me?
No. Your existing handle and profile carry over as they are. This update mainly affects clients who didn't already have a handle.
I never set up a handle. Why do I have one?
We now assign a handle automatically to every client with a chequing account, so friends can send you money with Wealthsimple Pay. You'll get a Meet your new handle notification when we assign yours. You can change your handle, or turn on Privacy Mode if you'd rather not be found.
Why does my handle include my name?
We build your handle from the first name on your profile, the first letter of your last name, and some numbers, so friends can recognize you. You can change it to something else.
Why doesn't my handle include my name?
In some cases we use your initials, or WS and some numbers, instead of your name. You can change your handle.
Can other people find me by my handle?
Yes, by default. Anyone who enters your full handle exactly can find you to send you money or send you a request. They can't find you by your name, email, phone number, or part of your handle. If you'd rather not be found, you can turn on Privacy Mode.
Why can't I find my friend when I search?
Enter your friend's full handle exactly. Searching by name, email, phone number, or part of a handle doesn't work. If you've entered the full handle and still can't find them, they may have Privacy Mode on.
Why does it say my handle is taken?
Every handle is unique, so someone already has the one you entered. Try a different one.
What is my wealthsimple.me address?
It's an autodeposit address that comes with your handle. Interac e-Transfer® transactions sent to it deposit automatically into your chequing account. It's tied to your handle, so you can't choose a different address. If you change your handle, we register a new address to match. Your existing autodeposit emails and phone numbers stay as they are and work alongside this address.
