Overview
Dividend reinvestments can fail for a few reasons, most commonly because reinvestment is turned off for your account. Not having enough cash, an ineligible security, or a currency mismatch can also stop it. Here's what causes it and what you can do next.
Reasons your dividends didn't reinvest automatically
There are a few reasons why your dividends might not have been automatically reinvested. Here are some of the most common ones:
- Reinvestment is turned off: Dividend reinvestment applies to your entire account, not to individual stocks. If it's turned off for the account holding the security, your dividends won't be reinvested. You can turn it on in the Wealthsimple app.
- Not enough cash: You need enough cash in your account to cover the cost of the additional shares.
- Order quantity: The order quantity must be at least 0.0001 shares.
- Account status: You must own shares of the stock or ETF at the time of receiving dividends, and the security can't be pending a limit sell. The account must also be active (not closed or suspended).
- Joint non-registered accounts: Joint non-registered accounts aren't eligible for dividend reinvestments at this time.
- Security eligibility: The security must be eligible for fractional trading and trading in general.
- Currency mismatch: Dividends must land in an account that matches their currency (CAD dividends in a CAD account, USD dividends in a USD account). This can happen during USD account upgrades.
- Technical issues: Occasionally, technical issues may prevent us from processing the reinvestment.
