Moving expenses are typically only claimable for relocations within Canada. As a result, most newcomers to Canada aren't eligible to claim these expenses.
However, you may be able to claim moving expenses if you fall into one of these categories:
- Full-time student: You moved to Canada to study full-time at a post-secondary institution.
- Factual resident: You maintained residential ties in Canada while living abroad.
- Deemed resident: You're considered a resident of Canada for tax purposes, even if you lived outside the country.
If you fall into one of these categories, make sure to keep all relevant receipts and documentation to support your claim.
For more information on determining your residency status, visit the Canada Revenue Agency website.
