If your spouse is not a resident of Canada, follow these steps in Wealthsimple Tax:
- Set your marital status:
- In the Personal information section, select "Married" from the marital status dropdown
- Answer "No" to the question "Do you want to prepare your returns together?"
- Enter your spouse's information in the Your Partner section:
- Provide your spouse's year of birth
- Enter your spouse's worldwide income in the net income field
- If you don't support your spouse, select "Check here if you can't claim the amount for partner on line 30300"
Important notes:
- For Québec residents: The checkbox for not claiming the partner amount is not available
- Ensure you're reporting your spouse's worldwide income, not just Canadian-source income
Claiming the amount for partner:
- Review paragraph 1.92 of the CRA's guidelines for detailed information
- Generally, you can claim this amount if you supported your spouse and their net income was below the threshold
Reporting requirements:
- You may have additional reporting requirements for a non-resident spouse
- If unsure about your obligations, contact the CRA directly for guidance
Remember:
- Accurately reporting your marital status and spouse's income affects various credits and deductions
- Keep records of your spouse's worldwide income for your tax files
