To correctly claim and transfer the disability amount between partners, follow these steps in Wealthsimple Tax:
For linked profiles:
- In the profile of the partner with the disability:
- Add the Disability Amount section
- Answer "Yes" to "Are you claiming the disability amount and have a valid T2201 on file with the CRA?"
- In the other partner's profile:
- Go to the Your Partner section
- Answer "Yes" to "Does your partner have an infirmity or disability?"
For unlinked profiles:
- In the profile of the partner with the disability (Partner One):
- Add the Disability Amount section
- Answer "Yes" to "Are you claiming the disability amount and have a valid T2201 on file with the CRA?"
- Review their T1 General in the Documents section
- Note the amount on Line 31600
- In the other partner's profile (Partner Two):
- Go to the Your Partner section
- Enter the amount from Partner One's Line 31600 in the Disability amount field under the Federal > Credits that can be transferred subsection
- Click the Review & Optimize button
- Answer "It is" to "Does your partner have a valid T2201 (Disability Tax Credit Certificate) on file with the CRA, and is that T2201 registered on your account with the CRA? If you answer "It is", but your partner's T2201 is not registered on your account, your return will be rejected by NETFILE." in the Review & Optimize section
- Check Schedule 2 for the transferred disability amount on Line 35700
Important notes:
- The partner with the disability must use the credit on their return first
- Only the remaining amounts can be transferred to their partner
- Linked profiles typically handle this transfer automatically
Remember:
- Keep documentation of the T2201 for your records
- Learn more about transferring amounts to your spouse or common-law partner
