Overview
Active Trader is a status you earn by trading frequently on Wealthsimple. When you qualify, you unlock a boosted 3% match on transfers, priority support, free phone-in trades through our Trade Desk, and early access to new features. Active Trader is separate from Premium and Generation — it stacks on top of your existing status, so you keep every benefit you already have.
How to qualify
You qualify for Active Trader status by completing 50 or more eligible trades in a single calendar month.
What counts as an eligible trade:
- Manually placed buy or sell orders for stocks, ETFs, options, crypto, precious metals, or futures in a Wealthsimple Trade account (multi-leg options trades count as one eligible trade)
- Fractional orders
- Trades placed by you on another client's account as their authorized trader
- Trades placed by the Trade Desk on your behalf when you call to place a trade
What doesn't count:
- Automated or recurring orders
Keeping your status:
Once you qualify, your Active Trader status is granted for that calendar month and the following calendar month — your grace month. To keep your status beyond the grace month, complete 50 or more eligible trades during the grace month itself.
If you don't requalify during your grace month, your status will lapse at the end of that month. You can earn it back any time by completing 50 eligible trades in a calendar month.
Your benefits
3% deposit match: Active Traders who register for the 3% match promotion and transfer $25,000 or more to Wealthsimple within 30 days of registering receive a 3% cash bonus on the net transferred amount, up to a maximum of $2,000,000. The bonus is paid as 24 equal monthly instalments over two years. You'll need to hold Active Trader status when each instalment is paid to receive the 3% rate. Priority support: Calls and emails from Active Traders are prioritized and routed to our most experienced agents. Phone wait time averages under 1 minute. Emails receive a first reply within 4 hours.
Free phone-in trades: Place trades over the phone with a licensed Investment Representative through our Trade Desk, free of charge. This service is normally $45 per trade.
Early access: Be among the first to try new features and products before they're available to everyone.
Check your Active Trader status
You can see your Active Trader status and current monthly trade count on your profile:
- Log in to the Wealthsimple app
- Tap the Profile (person) icon in the top right-hand corner
- Look for the Active Trader card on your profile
- Tap the card to open the Active Trader status screen
- Log in to your Wealthsimple profile
- Click the Profile icon in the bottom left corner
- Click your name at the top of the menu to open your profile page
- Find the Active Trader card and click Learn more to open the Active Trader status screen
What your status screen shows
Your status screen will show one of three states, depending on your current activity:
- You're an Active Trader: You've qualified and your benefits are active; the screen shows the date your status is valid until
- Stay an Active Trader: You qualified last month and you're in your grace month; you'll see how many more trades you need this month to keep your status
- Become an Active Trader: You haven't qualified recently; you'll see how trading more can unlock the benefits
If you've never held Active Trader status, you won't see the card or status screen.
Frequently asked questions
How long does my Active Trader status last?
Once you qualify by completing 50 or more eligible trades in a calendar month, your status applies for that month and the following calendar month — your grace month. To keep your status beyond the grace month, complete 50 or more eligible trades during the grace month itself. If you don't, your status will lapse at the end of the grace month. Your Active Trader status screen always shows the exact date your current status is valid until.
When does my trade count reset each month?
Your trade count resets at the start of each calendar month. Because we calculate trade counts overnight, your updated count and status may take up to 24 hours to appear in the app.
Why doesn't my trade count update immediately?
Your trade count is calculated overnight and refreshes every 24 hours — it's not real-time. Check back the next day to see your most recent activity reflected.
I placed trades on another client's account as their authorized trader. Do those count toward my status?
Yes. Trades count toward whoever places them, not toward the account they were placed in. If you place trades on someone else's account as their authorized trader, those trades count toward your Active Trader status. The same applies in reverse — if an authorized trader places trades on your account, those count toward their status, not yours.
What counts as an eligible trade for Active Trader status?
Eligible trades are manually placed buy or sell orders for stocks, ETFs, options, crypto, precious metals, or futures. They can be placed by you directly or by the Trade Desk on your behalf. Automated and recurring orders aren't eligible. Fractional orders count.
What is the Trade Desk and how do I reach it?
The Trade Desk is a direct phone line where licensed Investment Representatives can place trades on your behalf. As an Active Trader, phone-in trades are free — normally a $45 value per trade. To reach the Trade Desk, call Wealthsimple's main support number. When you call, you'll be asked: "Are you calling to place a trade or have questions about trading, margin, or options?" Choose yes to be connected to the Trade Desk. If you're calling about something else, you'll be routed to priority support.
What are the Trade Desk hours?
The Trade Desk is open Monday to Friday, 9:30 am–4:00 pm ET (market hours). If you call outside these hours, you'll be connected to our general support team. Any trading-related requests will be prioritized for follow-up by an Investment Representative the next morning.
How does the 3% deposit match work?
Active Traders who register for the 3% match promotion and transfer $25,000 or more to Wealthsimple within 30 days of registering receive a 3% cash bonus on the net transferred amount, up to a maximum of $2,000,000. What happens to my 3% match if I lose Active Trader status?
If your Active Trader status lapses, your remaining monthly instalments will be paid at the 1% rate from the next scheduled payment, not the 3% rate. Payments already made at the 3% rate aren't affected. If you requalify for Active Trader status, your remaining payments will go back to the 3% rate from the next scheduled payment after you requalify.
Is there a hold period for the 3% match?
Yes. Once you start receiving the 3% match, a 730-day hold period (about two years) applies. During this period, you can't withdraw more than 20% of your net transferred amount, or future instalments may be adjusted. Transfers between your own Wealthsimple accounts and changes in market value don't count toward the withdrawal limit.
My profile says "Active Trader Off." What does that mean?
"Active Trader Off" means you previously held Active Trader status but didn't requalify during your grace month. To reactivate your status, complete 50 eligible trades in a calendar month.
Does Active Trader status affect my Premium or Generation benefits?
No. Active Trader benefits stack on top of your existing status. If you're a Premium or Generation client, you keep all of your current lifestyle benefits and gain Active Trader benefits on top.
Can Wealthsimple remove my Active Trader status?
Wealthsimple may revoke Active Trader status if trading activity appears intended only to qualify for the program — for example, placing many minimal-value trades.
