Error 2197 typically occurs when there's a discrepancy in your reported RRSP contributions. If you're encountering this error, follow these steps:
First, confirm that:
- The CRA expects $0 as your unused contributions
- You've answered "No" or entered $0 for unused contributions in the RRSP Contributions & Deduction section
If both are true, you may have forgotten to report an RRSP contribution on a previous year's return. Here's how to fix it:
Step 1: Update your previous year's return
- Switch to your prior year's return in Wealthsimple Tax
- Add the missing RRSP contribution to the RRSP contributions table
- Find your RRSP contribution receipts in your CRA My Account under "Tax information slips (T4 and more)"
- Answer "Yes" to the question "Did you make any RRSP contributions or have any transfers?" to display the RRSP contributions table
- Decide whether to deduct or carry forward this amount in the Optimizations section
- Note any unused contributions at the end of the year
- ReFILE your prior year's return
- Wait for your return to be reassessed (usually happens quickly)
Step 2: File your current return
- Switch back to your current year's return
- If you included the forgotten contribution this year, remove it
- If you had unused contributions from the previous year, add them at the bottom of the RRSP Contributions & Deduction section
Important: If you're behind on filing returns, file them in chronological order (earliest to latest). Wait for each Notice of Assessment before filing the next year to avoid Error 2197.
