If your card gets declined, we want to help resolve the issue as soon as possible. We’ll send you a push notification to let you know why and what you can do to fix it.
Below, you can find more information about common reasons your Wealthsimple Cash card may get declined, as well as how to resolve them.
Insufficient funds
To make a purchase with your Wealthsimple Cash card, you must have enough funds in your Available to Spend balance. You can increase your Available to Spend balance by making either an instant deposit or a standard deposit.
With an instant deposit, you can access your funds immediately. Standard deposits take three business days to settle before they show up in your Available to Spend balance.
When you click on the push notification resulting from the declined transaction, the app will bring you to a page where you can Add money. There will be an indicator on the deposit page that lets you know if these funds will be available to spend immediately.
Your physical card is not activated yet
There are two steps you'll need to take once you receive your physical Wealthsimple Cash card:
- You will need to activate your card by calling +1 877-868-0854. We'll also ask you to set up your PIN.
- You will need to sync your PIN to your card. You can do this by making a purchase at a merchant or going to an ATM and performing a transaction using your card’s chip. You can't sync your PIN by using tap to pay.
When you click on the push notification resulting from the declined transaction, the app will bring you to a page where you can Activate your card. From here, you can call to activate the card. This process is fast and automated - no waiting on hold.
Locked Card
If you lose your Wealthsimple Cash card, or if it gets stolen, you can lock it to prevent unauthorized transactions.
If you try to use your card when it’s locked, you’ll receive a notification to let you know why your transaction declined. You can then follow the prompt from the push notification to access a page where you can unlock your card. Once unlocked, you should be able to use your card without issue.
Unsupported transactions
There are certain transaction types and merchants that are not supported by the Wealthsimple Cash card. If you try to use your card for one of these transactions, the push notification will alert you to the fact that “This transaction type is not supported”. You can tap Learn More to better understand what is and what is not supported with the Wealthsimple Cash card.
In these cases, there is no way to resolve the issue and you will need to use an alternative form of payment.
Choosing 'Debit' instead of 'Credit'
The Wealthsimple Cash card is a prepaid Mastercard. When you use your card at a payment terminal, you will need to select Credit. The card uses the Mastercard payments system you can use it everywhere that accepts Mastercard.
