Wealthsimple Tax automatically determines your eligibility for the caregiver amount for infirm children under 18 years of age (line 30500) based on the information you provide in the Your Dependants section. However, there may be situations where you don't want to claim these credits. Here's how to opt-out:
- Navigate to the Your Dependants section in your tax profile
- Locate the dependant for whom the credit has been automatically applied
- Look for the override fields in the right-hand column of the table
- To opt out of claiming the credit:
- Enter $0 in the federal override claim column
- Enter $0 in the provincial override claim column (if applicable)
- If you want to split the claim with someone other than your linked partner, you can enter a partial amount in these fields
Important notes:
- You might want to opt-out if someone else is claiming this credit for the same dependant
- Entering $0 in the override fields ensures the credit won't be claimed on your return
- Double-check your entries to ensure accuracy
Remember:
- Only use the override fields if you're certain you don't want to claim the credit
- If your situation changes, you can always update these fields
If you're unsure about whether you should claim these credits, consider consulting with a tax expert. If you need assistance entering this information in Wealthsimple Tax, please contact Wealthsimple support.
