To transfer your dependant's unused disability amount to your return:
- Add the Your Dependants section to your profile
- Enter your dependants information
- Answer "Yes" to the question "Did this dependant have an infirmity or disability?"
- Under the Disability, infirmity, and caregiver amount subsection, answer "Yes" to the question "Does your dependant qualify for the disability amount?"
- Answer "Yes" to the question "Will you transfer your dependant's unused disability amount?"
- Enter or calculate your dependant's transferrable amounts
Note: If your child doesn’t file a tax return, it can be calculated in the Your Dependants section by entering their taxable income (including zero).
Find your dependant's unused amounts
- Switch to their profile using the dropdown button in the top menu bar
- Navigate to the Disability Amount section
- Note the amounts available for transfer
Important: Complete your dependant's return before checking for unused amounts. If your dependant has a partner, any transferable amount will automatically go to the partner's return and won't be displayed.
Example
Linda transfers her adult son Jason's disability amount to her return.
In Jason's profile:
- Linda checks the Disability Amount section
- She notes the available transfer amounts
In Linda's profile:
- Linda adds the Your Dependants section
- She indicates Jason qualifies for the disability amount
- She selects to transfer his unused amount
- Linda enters the federal and provincial amounts from Jason's return
