Since 2015, Service Canada has issued T4A(P) slips for Child Benefits directly to children. If you've received a T4A(P) slip in your child's name, follow these steps to report it correctly:
- Do not include the T4A(P) slip in your own Canada Pension Plan/Québec Pension Plan Benefits section
- Navigate to the Your Dependants section in your tax profile
- Find the entry for the child who received the T4A(P)
- Enter the amount from the T4A(P) in the "Net income" (or Federal net income if you're filing a Québec return) field for that child
Important notes:
- Your child usually doesn't need to file their own tax return for this income
- Only in specific situations would your child need to file their own return
Remember:
- Always enter the amount exactly as it appears on the T4A(P) slip
- This process ensures the income is correctly attributed to your child for tax purposes
If you're unsure whether your child needs to file their own tax return, consider consulting with a tax expert. If you need assistance entering this information in Wealthsimple Tax, please contact Wealthsimple support.
