Most provinces have eliminated fitness and arts tax credits for children, including those with disabilities. Manitoba and Yukon are the only provinces/territories that offer Children's Fitness Tax Credits and Arts Tax Credits. Here's how to claim these credits in Wealthsimple Tax:
- Navigate to the Personal information section in your profile
- In the You and Your Family subsection, ensure you've answered "Yes" to the question "Do you have any dependants?"
- This will automatically add the Your Dependants section to your profile
- In the Your Dependants section:
- Complete all mandatory fields (marked with an asterisk) for your child
- After completing the mandatory fields, look for the question "Did you have fitness or arts expenses for [child's name]?"
- Answer "Yes" to this question
- In the Tax credits for your child table that appears:
- Select the type of expense (Fitness or Arts)
- Enter a description (this information is for your records only and is not submitted to the CRA)
- Enter the amount spent
- Repeat steps 4-5 for each child with eligible expenses
Important notes:
- These credits are only available for Manitoba and Yukon residents
- Keep all receipts for eligible expenses
- Eligibility criteria and credit amounts may vary, so check your provincial government website for specific details
- Wealthsimple Tax will automatically calculate the credit based on your entries
Remember:
- Other provinces may offer different types of credits or deductions for children or individuals with disabilities
- Always check for the most current information as tax credits can change yearly
If you're unsure about which credits you're eligible for or how to claim them, consider consulting with a tax expert.
